On this day in 1775 Lord Dunmore, promises freedom to male enslaved Afrikans who join British army in their fight against the American Patriots.
John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore, royal governor of the British Colony of Virginia. Proclaimed martial law and promised freedom for enslaved individuals of American Patriots who left their masters and joined the royal forces.
