Dr. Dominique Gaspard was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on December 22nd, 1884 and died February 6th, 1938 in Montreal. He was studying medicine at the University of Montreal during the First World War and interrupted his studies to enlist in the Canadian Expeditionary Forces. He was one of the founding members of the Negro Community Centre in Montreal in the 1920s and later would go on to become one of the founding members of Legion 50 for Black veterans as regular Legions refused to accept Black veterans because of the colour of their skin.

Forty years ago Thamis Gale documented his story in Montreal as his father William Gale was also a founding member of Legion 50. Thamis served Canada in the Second World War and was a member of the all Black Legion Hockey team during the 1947/1947 season
