Dr. Dominique Gaspard was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on December 22nd, 1884 and died February 6th, 1938 in Montreal. He was studying medicine at the University of Montreal during the First World War and interrupted his studies to enlist in the Canadian Expeditionary Forces. He was one of the founding members of the Negro Community Centre in Montreal in the 1920s and later would go on to become one of the founding members of Legion 50 for Black veterans as regular Legions refused to accept Black veterans because of the colour of their skin.

Forty years ago Thamis Gale documented his story in Montreal as his father William Gale was also a founding member of Legion 50. Thamis served Canada in the Second World War and was a member of the all Black Legion Hockey team during the 1947/1947 season

Did you know Charles Young was a linguist?

Charles Young arrived in Wilberforce in 1894 on a detached assignment. He was tasked with starting the military and tactics training courses at Wilberforce University. But being an accomplished linguist, he also taught five languages. He taught Latin, Greek, French, Spanish, and German. His knowledge of languages helped him during his military service. He knew Spanish, which would have helped him while traveling through Mexico during the Punitive Expedition. He knew French, which would have helped him as an attaché in Haiti while adjusting to Haitian society. While in Haiti, he authored a French-English-Creole dictionary and grammar book for the military.

Charles Young’s children were also linguists. His children went to boarding schools in France and Belgium. His daughter, Marie Young, taught music, French, and German at Jackson State University in Mississippi and Wilberforce University. His son Charles Noel Young taught Agriculture and German at Central State University in Ohio. He was also proficient in Russian.

Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges (born December 25, 1745, and passed away on June 10, 1799) was a highly accomplished individual who excelled in various fields. He was a renowned fencer, an exceptionally talented violinist, and the conductor of Paris' leading symphony orchestra. Despite his prowess in fencing, which included surviving two assassination attempts and defending his city against the Austrian Army during the French Revolutionary War, he is most famous for being the first classical composer of African descent.

Often referred to as "The Black Mozart," this nickname is somewhat misleading as Saint-Georges actually predates Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart by over a decade. In addition to his musical and fencing achievements, he was also an excellent runner, pistol marksman, and would swim across the Seine river using only one arm for cardiovascular training.

At the age of 13, he was admitted to the prestigious Boëssière’s Academy of Fencing and Horsemanship. By the time he was 15, he was already besting his instructors in fencing duels. At 17, he was considered to possess "the greatest speed imaginable" and was deemed the finest fencer in France in 1762.

During the French Revolutionary Wars, the Chevalier de Saint-Georges was promoted from Captain to Colonel and took command of the "Legion de Saint-Georges," the first-ever all-black unit to serve in a European army. The unit was made up of soldiers from the French province of Saint-Domingue (modern-day Haiti). Notably, his second-in-command, Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, was known as "The Black Devil," a nickname earned through his own remarkable exploits. Be sure to learn more about him as well!

I apologize for the lack of clarity, but this is the only photograph I could find of Anderson Bonner. Anderson had a remarkable success story during early Dallas history. Per "Dallas Uncovered," 2nd edition:

"Anderson Bonner was a former slave who had extensive land holdings north of Dallas along White Rock Creek and Cottonwood Branch. Bonner came from Alabama with his brother and sister to settle and farm land in the area north of White Rock Creek.

Although he signed his name with an "X" on deeds, Bonner purchased hundreds of acres of land with profits from his farm produce and that of sharecroppers who leased from him. His business acumen was evident in the variety of legal transactions he handled. The first recorded deed for Bonner's land purchases was filed in Dallas County, August 10, 1874. Married to Eliza Bonner, who preceded him in death, Anderson had nine children and later married Lucinda from Waxahachie, Texas."

Today, in Anderson Bonner Park, bicycle riders cruise along trails that were once part of the Bonner farmland.
