UK NEEDS ETHNICITY PAY GAP REPORTING ENSHRINED IN LAW, TUC CONGRESS HEARS

This is not about quotas or box ticking; this is about fairness and common human decency, says GMB Union

The UK needs ethnicity pay gap reporting enshrined in law to tackle inequality, GMB Union told TUC congress today.

Black, Asian and minority ethnic workers currently lose a colossal £3.2 billion a year in wages compared to white workers, congress heard.

The ethnicity pay gap currently affects some 1.9 million black, Asian and minority ethnic workers in the UK.

In 2018, it became law for companies with 250 or more employees to publish their gender pay gap.

Taranjit Chana, GMB National Equality Forum Race Lead, said:

“This is not about quotas or box ticking; this is about fairness and common human decency.

“Black, Asian and minority ethnic people excel across education - so why are black, Asian and minority ethnic workers paid £3.2 billion less?

“Why are only 6% of top jobs in the NHS and 3% of police chief inspectors black, Asian and minority ethnic workers?

“The UK urgently needs an ethnicity pay gap enshrined in law to tackle this rampant inequality.”
